This is the general practice in the military:
The general receives command from the ruler.
He assembles the troops,
Forms the army,
And sets up camp.
Yet of all the tasks,
The real challenge is the armed conflict itself.
 
The challenge of the armed conflict
Lies in making what’s circuitous direct
And in making what’s unfavorable useful.
 
If you make the enemy's route circuitous,
And lure him with an opportunity for gain,
Then you can set out behind him
Yet arrive before him.
Those who can do this
Understand the tactics of the circuitous and the direct.
 
Armed conflict brings gain.
Armed conflict brings risk.

 

Send the entire army into action
To seize an opportunity
And you may arrive too late.
 
Send a reduced army into action
To seize an opportunity
And your supplies and equipment may be lost.
 
Abandon your equipment and depart
Carrying only your armor,
March day and night
Without stopping,
March thirty miles
At double your usual speed
To obtain some gain
And you may lose all your commanders.
The strong will arrive first,
The weak will lag behind
Yet only one-tenth of your soldiers will arrive.
 
March fifteen miles
At excessive speed
To seize an opportunity
And the commander of the advance force will be lost
And only one half of your soldiers will arrive.
 
March ten miles
To seize an opportunity
And two thirds of your soldiers will arrive.
 
Without the equipment an army is lost.
Without the provisions an army is lost.
Without the supplies an army is lost.
 
If you dont know the plans of your neighbors
You cannot form alliances with them.
If you dont know the lay of the land:
Mountains and forests,
Natural hazards
Marshes and swamps,
You cannot advance the army.
If you dont use local guides
You cannot take advantage of the terrain.

 

In war
Positions are established by guile,
Actions are driven by gain,
Conditions shaped by dividing and uniting the troops.
 
That is why
An army is swift like a wind.
Stately like a forest.
Ravaging like fire.
Standing firm like a mountain.
Inscrutable like darkness.
Striking hard like a thunderbolt.
 
When plundering the countryside divide your troops.
When expanding your territory divide the spoils.
Assess the situation before making a move.
 
Victory comes to those
Who know the tactics of the circuitous and the direct.
This is the art of the armed conflict.

In night battles use many torches and drums.

Are used to unify the soldiers eyes and ears.
 
Once the army acts as a whole
The brave cannot advance alone,
The timid cannot retreat alone.
This is the way to use many.
 
The army may be robbed of its spirit.
The commander may be robbed of his mind.
 
Now,
When fighting begins the spirit is keen,
With time it starts to weaken,
In the end it is spent.
Those skilled in warfare
Avoid the enemy when his spirit is keen,
They strike when his spirit is weakened
Or when it is spent.
This is the way to control spirit.
 
Confront the disordered with order.
Confront the clamorous with calm.
This is the way to control the mind.
 
To confront the distant use the near.
To confront the fatigued use the rested.
To confront the hungry use the sated.
This is the way to control strength.
 
Do not engage well-arrayed banners.
Do not attack impressive formations.
This is the way to control change.
 
This is the way to employ troops:
Do not attack the enemy that is on a high ground.
Do not oppose an enemy that has his back to a hill.
Do not pursue an enemy feigning retreat.
Do not attack the enemys finest.
Do not swallow the enemys bait.
Do not obstruct an enemy returning home.
Leave a way of escape to a surrounded enemy
Do not press a cornered enemy.
This is the art of warfare.
